Paramananda Deepaduththaramaya ( Kachchiwatta Temple) is situated in the beautiful Coastal city Galle of Sri Lanka. This temple is very famous nationally and internationally. The origin of the temple goes back to 1779 but even before that year this place was a sacred place, local people respected and worshiped the Vishnu Shrine in early ages.
Among temples of Sri Lanka today Kachciwatta is the main Buddhist temple in down south Sri Lanka. Many local and foreign people come here to worship and make offerings to Lord Buddha. The Vishnu Devalaya of Kachchiwatta is evenly famous and respected among most Buddhists. Every Saturday there is a Muruthen Poojawa , special ritual performed to please Gods and The Asala Perahera is a Buddhist ceremony performed in May every year . It is a very colorful and eye catching event. Lots of traditional dancers, elephants participates in the event.
The kachchiwatta Temple is not just a place where people come to worship. It is an educational center for students learning Buddhism. Lot of social service work is done by the "Praja Sanwardana Padanama”, the social services foundation of the temple. The services done to the underprivileged people of Sri Lanka by this temple are funded by individual donors and organizations. Free educations to children, medical services, educational and other aids to children are some of the social service work performed. Under the leadership of Nayaka Thero the temple stands as the strength of the underprivileged people in the Tsunami stricken down south area of Sri Lanka. |
